Features on Upright Vacuums
Many upright vacuums are available in either the familiar bagged style or the increasingly popular bagless system. Generally the sucking power of a bagless model is greater than comparable bagged units plus there is no need to purchase bags saving time and money. However emptying the canister can be a dusty process and some resources claim bagged upright vacuum models are better at trapping dirt and dust particles.
Available upright vacuum features include a full-bag alert which will notify you when the bag is getting to full. A dirt sensor notifies you when there is a certain level of particles in the vacuums air stream indicating there is still dirt not being sucked into the bag. An on/off switch for the power brush is a good feature to have when using attachments, running of the power brush in one position will damage the carpet.
Other common accessories found on upright vacuums include; upholstery tools, a crevice tool, extension wand, retractable cord and a manual or automatic pile-height adjustment. Some uprights are designed to have dirt sucked through the bag before it reaches the fan, while other systems may have the dirt go through the fan then through to the bag, this could damage the fan. Certified HEPA filter are highly recommended as well.
